Before you begin the Firefighter Career Pathway Certificate program at Rogue Community College, it helps to understand how the process works. This program includes hands-on training and has additional requirements beyond general college admission. You will apply to RCC, complete placement and advising steps and submit applications for required training, including the Firefighter Essentials 1 Academy offered in the fall, and Emergency Medical Technician training offered fall and winter or winter and spring. Starting these steps early can help ensure a smooth entry into the program.
Student Firefighter Program
The Student Firefighter program is a competitive opportunity coordinated through Rogue
Community College that allows you to gain hands-on fire service experience while completing
your education. Students apply for student firefighter positions through RCC and are
ranked based on the selection process. Candidates are then invited to apply to participating
fire agencies in order of ranking, based on available openings. Because positions
are limited, not all applicants are placed each year.
If you are selected, you are hired by a fire agency and receive on-the-job training
while working alongside career firefighters. Departments typically cover tuition and
books, and most student firefighters earn wages while gaining valuable real-world
experience that strengthens future employment opportunities in the fire service.
Some students choose to complete the Fire Science degree without becoming a student
firefighter, often because of work or family commitments. This option allows you to
pay your own tuition and complete the program while preparing for future hiring opportunities.
Minimum qualifications for student firefighter applicants typically include being at least 18 years old, holding Emergency Medical Technician certification, completing Fire Essentials 1 with state certification and passing agency physical ability testing and interviews. RCC advisors are available to help you understand your options and decide which pathway best fits your goals.

Because this is a special admission program, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be admitted to Rogue Community College.
- Complete the RCC Placement Process.
- Be at least 17 years old to apply for required EMT courses.
- Have a high school diploma or GED® for certification.
- Meet all screening requirements outlined in state administrative rules and RCC guidelines.
- Submit required applications for the Firefighter Essentials 1 Academy and EMT training by posted deadlines.
An advisor will work with you to design an individualized course sequence that aligns your training and coursework. While some selection steps are regulated by state and industry standards, RCC is here to support you as you prepare for a career in the fire service. RCC coordinates a joint testing and placement process for the Firefighter Essentials 1 Academy and Student Firefighter programs, creating a clear and supported pathway into the fire service. Whether you pursue a student firefighter position or complete the degree independently, the Fire Science program prepares you to step confidently into structural fire protection and emergency response careers.
Graduation Requirements
The Firefighter Career Pathway Certificate requires the completion of 38 program credits. Students must complete all courses outlined in this program with a grade of “C” or better to earn this degree. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with a Fire Science program advisor before beginning any coursework.

Credit for Prior Learning
The Firefighter program may be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, meaning your work experience, training or other learning outside the classroom could count for college credit — helping you save time and reduce costs.
