Writing tutors at Rogue Community College are here to help you strengthen your writing skills and improve your work over time. Tutoring sessions focus on skill development rather than correcting papers, and session length may vary depending on how busy the center is.

To make the most of your visit, plan ahead and come prepared. Tutors are generally unable to read entire papers longer than three pages, so it is helpful to identify specific areas you want to focus on.

How to Prepare for Writing Tutoring

To get the most benefit from your session, please:

  • Bring as much information about your assignment as possible, including instructions or grading criteria.
  • Check with your instructor if you have questions about the assignment requirements.
  • Avoid waiting until the last minute before a deadline.
  • Bring graded or returned essays if you want help understanding feedback.
  • Bring your paper in a fairly finished form, not a first rough draft.
  • Come with specific questions about areas such as organization, mechanics, development of ideas, clarity or flow.

Tutors will guide you in identifying patterns or areas to revise rather than correcting every error for you.

What Writing Tutors Can and Cannot Do

  • Help you understand assignment expectations.
  • Provide feedback on structure, clarity and development of ideas.
  • Offer strategies for revising and strengthening your writing.

  • Proofread, rewrite or correct your paper.
