The Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate is a special admission program, which means you must meet additional requirements and complete a separate application beyond general college admission. Before you start your program application, it helps to understand a few important steps that can set you up for success. Taking time to prepare now can make the process feel easier and help you feel more confident as you move toward your goals.
You may want to gather any past college transcripts. If you have taken courses at another accredited institution, RCC may be able to accept them as long as they meet current program requirements. Courses older than 10 years must be reviewed and approved by a department chair. If you earned College Now credits in high school, you will meet with a Human Services advisor to see how those apply.
Keep in mind that many agencies require background checks for practicum and employment. A record does not automatically prevent you from participating, and agencies often have an appeal process.

Students are encouraged to take notes so they can easily complete the subsequent quiz. The quiz needs to be passed with 100% correct answers to access the application. Students will have unlimited attempts to complete the quiz, but notes can be helpful in speeding up the process.

Graduation Requirements
The Substance Abuse Counseling Certificate requires the completion of 36-37 program credits. Students must complete all courses outlined in this program with a grade of “C-” or better to earn a certificate. For admission to the SOU Human Services program, RCC students must earn a minimum grade of “C” in human services, psychology and other core courses.
Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic & Career Coach or faculty advisor before beginning any coursework.

Credit for Prior Learning
The Substance Abuse Counseling program may be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, meaning your work experience, training or other learning outside the classroom could count for college credit — helping you save time and reduce costs.
