The Early Childhood Education Associate of Applied Science degree prepares you to advance your profession in the field of Early Childhood Education, working with infants, toddlers, or preschoolers. This program builds on the Certificate of Completion and prepares you to be a Lead Teacher or fulfill other leadership roles in child care centers, home-based child care, preschools, home visiting programs and parent education settings.
This program is flexible for new students and those already working in Early Childhood Education. It fulfills the formal training requirement for the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and the requirements for Oregon Registry: Pathways to Professional Recognition in Childhood Care and Education (ORO) Step 9.
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree builds on the Early Childhood Education certificate pathway. It also contributes to the Early Intervention Transfer to WOU; both transfer degrees to Bachelor’s degrees.
Practicum
An early childhood education practicum gives you hands-on experience in real early learning environments, where you can apply what you’ve learned in class while working alongside experienced educators. During your practicum, you’ll support children’s learning and development, practice professional communication with families and colleagues, and observe how classrooms operate day to day. This experience helps you build confidence, strengthen teaching skills and understand what employers expect in early childhood settings. A practicum is an important step toward entering the early childhood education workforce prepared, capable and classroom-ready.
Practicum placement will require proof of measles immunization status, RCC Student ID and criminal history background check. More information is available from the Early Childhood and Elementary Education Department.
Graduation Requirements
The Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education requires the completion of 90 program credits in addition to prerequisite credits, which may be waived based on placement. Students must complete all courses outlined in this program with a grade of “C-” or better to earn a degree. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an Academic & Career Coach or faculty advisor before beginning any coursework.
Courses may be taken over multiple terms, and not all courses are offered every term.

Credit for Prior Learning
The Early Childhood Education (Degree) program may be eligible for Credit for Prior Learning, meaning your work experience, training or other learning outside the classroom could count for college credit — helping you save time and reduce costs.
