Program Highlights

The following American Heart Association trainings are available at RCC. For course schedules and availability visit the CPR/First Aid classes on the RCC Campus Marketplace.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Provider

This course covers critical concepts of CPR and is designed to provide a wide variety of health care professionals and community members the ability to recognize sudden cardiac arrest, respiratory emergencies, provide CPR, use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relieve choking in children and adults. Successful completion of this course provides certification and the AHA BLS Provider Card.

Heartsaver® First Aid/CPR/AED

This class is available in a hybrid format. Course content is completed online, followed by a required in-person skills evaluation conducted by American Heart Association faculty. Heartsaver teaches community members the basic skills to help in emergencies until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrives. You’ll learn how to respond to choking, sudden cardiac arrest, bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first-aid situations. After you finish the course, you will receive a Heartsaver® First Aid/CPR/AED card.

Basic Life Support Instructor

Candidates for this course must have a current American Heart Association BLS CPR Provider or Heartsaver card and be proficient in the skills of that discipline. This 5-hour course provides information on the American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center, specific policies, an overview of instructor competencies, an outline of the AHA policy manual and a hands-on skills session conducted by Training Center faculty. BLS instructor candidates must then be successfully monitored by AHA Training Center faculty within six months to receive their BLS Instructor card. RCC’s Training Center Staff will coordinate with you to set up this final step once you have finished the course. Once issued, your instructor card will allow you to teach BLS CPR Provider and Heartsaver courses.

Basic Life Support Instructor Recertification

A 5-hour course for current BLS Instructors who are in good standing with the American Heart Association (AHA) Training Center who are seeking renewal. Successful completion results in recertification at the CPR Instructor level and issuance of an AHA BLS Instructor card, valid for two years.

You’ll learn about teamwork, communication, systems of care and care right after a cardiac arrest. Training includes large-group lessons and small-group practice with case scenarios. You must already have a current AHA BLS Provider card and know how to read electrocardiograms (ECGs) and understand emergency heart medicines. After finishing, you earn an AHA ACLS Provider certification.
