About Form 1098‑T
Each year, Rogue Community College prepares a 1098‑T Tuition Statement for students
who may be eligible for an education tax credit. Eligibility depends on factors such
as income, enrollment status and the amount of qualified educational expenses paid
during the calendar year.
The form may assist you or the person who claims you as a dependent when completing
IRS Form 8863, which is used to calculate education‑related tax credits.
RCC cannot provide individual tax advice. For assistance, consult a tax professional or visit the IRS website.
Reporting Changes (Box 1 vs. Box 2)
Due to changes in federal law effective with the 2018 tax year, RCC now reports amounts in Box 1, which reflects qualified tuition and related expenses you paid during the year.
RCC no longer reports amounts in Box 2 (amounts billed).
Your Account History in myRogue provides detailed documentation supporting the amounts shown on your 1098‑T.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 (TRA97) created several federal tax benefits related to higher education. These include the Hope Credit (now replaced by the American Opportunity Credit) and the Lifetime Learning Credit, which allow taxpayers to claim credits for qualifying educational expenses.
TRA97 also created a deduction for interest paid on qualifying student loans, reported on IRS Form 1098‑E. Education credits such as the American Opportunity Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit are reported using Form 1098‑T.
Institutions may report either:
Amounts paid for qualified tuition and related expenses (Box 1), or Amounts billed
for qualified tuition and related expenses (Box 2).
Rogue Community College reports payments received in Box 1. The amount reported may
differ from the amount paid in the calendar year.
Detailed transaction information is available in your Account History report through myRogue, which provides supporting documentation required by the IRS.
