Event title: Intent v Impact Seeds of Micro-Aggressions
Description:

What are micro-aggressions? How does one's cultural identity, lived-experience, and bias influence authentic relationships?Rogue Community College Diversity Programming Board logo

This workshop will focus on micro-aggressions, but more specifically on racial micro-aggressions as the catalyst for dialogue and learning. Micro-aggressions are acts, comments, and experiences that are not always overt in-and-of themselves. Rather, they are unintentional actions committed with little knowledge or understanding of their intent and impact. The results of micro-aggressions are a build-up of frustrations, hurt, and alienation over a long period of time that leads to an inevitable rift or damaged relationships. Learning Outcomes:

  • Define and recognize micro-aggressions
  • Evaluate how a person’s own cultural identity, lived-experience, and bias can influence authentic relationships.
  • Build on intervention techniques

About the Facilitator Javier Cervantes: Javier has served as the Director of the Department of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at Linn-Benton Community College since 2012. Previously he served as the Associate Dean of Student /Director of the Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Loyola University Chicago. He has also worked at Oregon State University and Portland State University. His career has been dedicated to the development of students and professionals seeking understanding while exploring their own identity and navigating a very complex and diverse world.

Campus: Riverside Campus (Medford)
